Thailand Update: Similan and Koh Phi Phi
A 2018 update on visitor limits, anchoring damage and plans to investigate reef conditions around Thailand’s islands.
Our next stop takes us to the Gulf of Thailand.
We have received several reports and photographs showing that a great deal is wrong here, with tour boats in particular causing severe damage to reefs. We will now take a closer look.
On 6 February 2018, the DNP, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, announced that visitor numbers to the Similan and Phi Phi islands would be restricted.
“There are many problems, such as oil leaking from boats, anchoring in reefs, rubbish and the effects on the islands’ local way of life.”
“…Floating jetties will be built so that corals are not destroyed.”
We think this is a good step in the right direction. Our team will be there to assess the situation first-hand.
